Topic Woodpecker Archived 2015-16.

We held a water day, where we took part in an activity called Life Without Taps, to get an insight into what it would be like to walk miles each day collect water for your family. In the afternoon we made tip taps - African hand washers, which have made a real difference to improving hygiene and reducing diseases.

As part of our water topic, we have been investigating evaporation, condensation, freezing and melting in Science. We found out about freezing by making our own ice cream! We mixed cream, vanilla and sugar, then wrapped it in ice and salt which lowers the freezing point of the ice. We pummeled the mixture for about 10 minutes, until it was ready to eat. Yummy!

Our new topic for the summer term is "Water of Life". The term got off to a great start with our visit to Langford Lakes, where we surveyed the River Wylye and enjoyed river dipping.

Our topic in the Spring Term was Invasion! We learned about the iron age Celts and how their lives changed after the Roman invasion.

Everyone made a great effort to dress up for our Celts & Romans day. We enjoyed a visit from Boudicca, who showed us lots of Celtic resources, such as a hare, which the Celts believed would help them win their battles. We had a debate abut which side we would fight on and most people chose the Celts!

We used story sticks to tell myths & legends we had written, in the style of Celtic bards or storytellers.

We made torcs, which wealthy Celts wore as a status symbol.

In the Autumn term we went on an Indian adventure!

We enjoyed a visit from Demi Ladwa, where we did the stick dance, Dandia Ras, and painted henna Mendhi patterns on our hands.

We had a great day in Southampton, where we visited the Hindu Mandir and took part in a mono printing workshop in the City Art Gallery. Both venues complimented the children on their good behaviour and positive attitudes!

To celebrate the festival of Diwali, we held an India day, when we all wore Indian clothes, or the colours of the Indian flag. We made shadow puppets to retell the story of Rama and Sita, we made our own Diwa lamps and we enjoyed making samosas and coconut barfi!

In October we enjoyed welcoming three visitors, Anil, Neha and Harshit, from our partner school Lawrence Homan Public School  in Lucknow, North India. They were able to answer lots of our questions - they'd visited the Taj Mahal, been to the River Ganges and ridden on an elephant!

The girls taught Harshit how to hoola hoop and he taught us Indian style PT and how to play kho-kho, a popular Indian tag game.

Here we are flying off to India at the beginning of term!
