During your child's first year at school we focus on a daily phonics program called Letters and Sounds. This begins soon after your child has settled at school and continues throughout Key Stage 1. At the end of each week your child brings home cards with the phonemes (letter sounds ) that have been introduced.

The CBBC website has a great section about phonics. It explains how phonics is taught and learned and has some fun games for the children to play.  Please click on the CBeebies icon below to take you to the web page.

In addition, your child will bring home key words that they are expected to be able to read by the end of their Reception Year. If your child is confident with reading these words then the next step is to learn to spell them.
