Curriculum Statement

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum which meets statutory requirements through high quality, memorable and enjoyable learning experiences.

Each term every class updates their ‘Topic Plan’ section on the website outlining the learning planned for the term with suggestions for activities to support learning at home.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Children in our Reception follow the EYFS Framework. The curriculum covers seven areas of learning:

  • communication and language

  • physical development

  • personal, social & emotional development

  • literacy

  • mathematics

  • understanding of the world

  • expressive arts and design

Children learn through experience of a wide range of practical and play-based activities, many of which will arise from the child's own interests and previous experience. Staff support, guide and assess children and modify the provision of activities to meet children's needs. We offer a well-resourced learning environment for our EYFS pupils.

All children are introduced to reading through the sharing of books and stories, daily teaching of a structured phonics programme (Letters and sounds), and reading books which are taken home daily.For parent guidance on Phonics please click here

 

We separate the Basic National Curriculum up into three phases: Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2)

Children in Key Stage 1 follow the National Curriculum for England and Wales. This includes daily literacy and numeracy based on the national frameworks (Click here for Literacy and Numeracy). Initially there is a focus on securing reading skills through daily phonics teaching alongside guided group reading tasks, individual reading and books to take home. The teaching of letter formation uses the Nelson Handwriting Style and the application of phonic knowledge to spelling is an integral part of developing independent writing skills.

Children are also taught computing skills. History, Geography, Science, Music, Art and Technology are taught through cross-curricular themes which also embrace the application of the skills learnt in literacy, numeracy and computing.

At this stage there is continued provision for some play-based learning and physical development through PE and games. French is introduced through action songs, rhymes and simple games from Year 1 onwards.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4 lower KS2) and (Year 5 & 6 Upper KS2)

Children in Key Stage 2 also follow the National Curriculum for England and Wales. As in KS1, History, Geography, Science, Music, Art and technology are taught through cross-curricular themes which includes daily literacy and numeracy lessons based on the national frameworks. Science may be taught as a separate subject or as the focus for cross curricular topic work. French is taught throughout KS2 and children continue to develop and apply their ICT skills across the curriculum.

Some topics may take the form of a short focus week, others may be a whole-school topic over several weeks. Children are encouraged to contribute to the development of the topic and carry out independent research to share with the class. Learning is enriched through visitors, artefact collections and visits to places of interest in the locality and further afield.

Religious Education & Collective Worship

 At Bemerton St John Church of England Primary School we comply fully with the statutory requirement to include RE in the curriculum, and to provide a daily act of collective worship of a broadly Christian nature. Our worship follows the values for life programme. 

We follow the locally agreed syllabus for RE (Wiltshire agreed syllabus) and place an emphasis on the practical application of Christian values to daily life and decision making. We recognise that some of our pupils may be of other faiths or no faith; however we believe that all pupils should have the opportunity to learn about the Christian faith and other major faiths which they will encounter in their lives, and have the opportunity to explore and reflect on values, spirituality, awe and wonder. Our RE curriculum links closely with the Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education curriculum (PSHCE). Parents have the right to withdraw their child from RE and Collective Worship. This should be expressed in writing to the headteacher.

Computing

As well as dedicated Computing lessons during which children learn specific skills (such as word processing and using the internet safely), there are many more lessons in which ICT is used as a ‘vehicle’ to learn in other areas. Teachers use National curriculum guidance and the School’s newly written Computing scheme of work (in line with the 2014 Curriculum) to plan lessons. Staff training is provided by the subject leader in addition to other outside agencies when appropriate. Individual support is also given to staff as required. The subject leader attends regular network meetings and attends additional training courses as necessary.

Computing encompasses two main areas:

–     Preparing our children to be competent, safe users of a range of digital equipment (computers, photographic and recording equipment, tablets, mobile phones etc).Click here for our E-safety policy

–     Developing our children’s understanding of how the technology we use daily actually works, the science behind the computers.

During KS1 the children will progressively develop skills in programming, creating digital content and using technology safely and respectfully. These skills will be further developed in KS2 and in addition the children will learn about computer modelling, networking and how the internet and search engines work. Where learning is enhanced by its use, children will use a variety of ICT equipment across the curriculum, selecting the appropriate hardware and software for the task.From Reception upwards our aim is for pupils to become as confident and skilled as possible in order to fully empower them in our increasingly technological age.

Progress in Computing is monitored continually by staff using an assessment checklist directly linked to the National Curriculum.

We encourage parents to attend our regular E-safety workshops.

Physical Activity

All children take part in approximately 2 hours of PE each week. Further opportunities for physical activity are offered through the provision of games equipment at playtimes. These include: access to a climbing frame, extensive sports field and a range of after-school clubs. Sports coaches and local clubs offer a range of activities during the school year and we compete in numerous competitions with Salisbury and the local cluster. Swimming is taught during the Autumn term in Year 4 and any children unable to swim 25m by the end of Year 6 are given booster sessions in Spring terms.

Sex and Relationships Education

In addition to the topics on Life Cycles, Life Processes and Our Bodies which form part of the science curriculum, the Governing body have authorised a programme for Upper Key Stage 2 which prepares children for puberty. Parents are informed of these lessons in advance and have the opportunity to view the materials used before giving their consent to their child's participation.

Special Educational Needs

Our school is an inclusive school. We make all our children welcome and to look forward to their school day. Every child is different and we view differences as an opportunity for adults and children alike to learn more about ourselves.

We make reasonable adjustments to ensure that pupils with special educational needs are not placed at a substantial disadvantage. Our accessibility plan (available from the school office or click here) describes the arrangements we have already made and the further proposals planned, to improve physical access to the school, access to the curriculum and access to written information.

The school has a policy for supporting children with special educational needs, which is revised yearly. This policy is available from the school office (or click here). Our aim is for all children to have access to all aspects of school life, as far as is reasonable and practicable.

We aim to prevent disabled pupils in our school being placed at a substantial disadvantage. We will take all reasonable steps to ensure that people with a disability are not treated differently without lawful justification.

Able and Talented

Our school values all children equally and endeavours to ensure that each child should have the opportunity to realise his/her potential in a challenging and supportive environment. 

Bemerton will have, at any time, talented or gifted pupils, some of whom may be exceptionally able and this may be in one or more areas of learning.   Our definition of ability recognises academic and practical performance as well as those who show outstanding artistic, musical and creative talent, physical skills, leadership qualities and the ability to process ideas and information. We plan for these children within the classroom lessons and have focussed gifted and talented days in school, we deliver to parents the information needed to enrol their children on external courses and we work closely with our cluster schools to provide collective experiences for all our gifted and talented students.  We believe that we can make a difference in enabling these pupils to achieve the greatest possible progress and recognise the value and importance of identifying and celebrating their achievements and successes.
