Welcome to Wren Class!

World Book Day 2017

What a fun day we have had celebrating World Book Day. Don't we all look fabulous dressed as a favourite character from a book? Can you name any of the characters on show? Well done Wrens!

Spring Term 2

The days are getting longer and the daffodils are beginning to pop up. It definitely feels like Spring is almost here. And so our learning moves on to imaginary places and is entitled, 'Imagine if...'.

Library Visit

Wrens visited Salisbury library to find out about how to use the facilities and to discover all of the exciting things available to borrow. We had a tour of the library including the upstairs Gallery where we saw an exhibition of art work by local schools. We were shown how to use the machines and then we were all issued with a library card and were able to select a book to borrow.

The walk home was rather soggy but the Wrens were resilient and made it back to school in time for a well earned lunch!

Spring Term 1

Welcome back to a new year and lots of new and exciting learning! Our theme this term is called, 'Toy Story' and we will be exploring old and new toys and materials that toys are made from.

Fairy Tales and Forests

We welcomed 'Perform' arts group to Key Stage 1 on Tuesday and the children had a wonderful journey in to the fairytale forest. Wrens were wonderful at creating the magic that is drama and storytelling!

We're all going on a winter welly walk!

Brrrr....it has been really cold and so we took advantage of a beautiful frosty morning to explore our changing environment. We wrapped up warm and headed off in our wellies to investigate the effects that the cold weather had had.

We then discovered that some of our toys had got trapped in ice! We had to put our best scientists' brains together to work out how to set the toys free.

Autumn Term 2

Term 2 is all about fun! Our theme is entitled, 'Let's Celebrate!' and that is exactly what we will be doing right up to the end of the term where we share our Key Stage Nativity with our families and friends.

Stay and Christingle

We invited our parents in to help us make our Christingles and to find out what the importance of the Christingle is for us at this time of year. Thank you to everyone that came to join us.

Colours of Christmas

The Bridge Project visited us to teach us about the importance and significance of colours at Christmas. We learned that:

  • white is like the snow and reminds us of the purity of Jesus
  • blue is the night sky and the star that showed the way to where Jesus was born
  • red is a heart that shows us that God loves us
  • gold is a special present and Jesus was God's special present to us
  • green is the evergreen trees and God's everlasting love
  • purple is a royal colour to remind us that Jesus was the King of kings

We had lots of fun singing and dancing with beautiful ribbons.

Healthy Smiles

We had a visit today from Zoe and her friends: Cheeky Monkey, and Tilly and Kevin the Tooth Fairies. They came to talk to us about how important it is to look after our teeth. We learned about how to brush our teeth, how many times a day and long we should brush our teeth for. We also sorted food in to those that our good for our teeth and those that we should not eat too much of.

Fire Safety

Through our theme - 'Let's Celebrate!' - we are learning about festivals of light and light and dark. We have been thinking about the importance of safety with regards to light sources and particularly about fire. We had a wonderful afternoon with Firefighter Jon learning about fire safety. We now know to "Get out, stay out and Call out"

Please enjoy looking through the photos from Term 1.

Nursery Rhyme dress up day - Thursday 20th October

Why is rhyme and children's ability to rhyme and hear rhyme so important?

Please click here to find out more.

What a fun day we had! We enjoyed guessing their character and they were excited to share their rhymes with their friends. In the afternoon, we welcomed family members to perform our rhymes to. We even taught them so rhymes that we sing to support our learning in maths.

Autumn is here!

We have had such lovely Autumn weather this week. This meant that we were able to enjoy our Autumn welly walk - looking for signs and changes in the world around us. Back in the class we had opportunities to record our findings in different ways. We used corks and paint to create Autumn trees. We used the leaves that we collected to create a spiky hedgehog. We explored dying flowers and their seeds, leaves, conkers and horse chestnuts through magnifying glasses and filled measuring containers with conkers to compare how many conkers were needed to fill them. Phew!

Stay and Picnic - Wednesday 12th October 2016

On Wednesday we welcomed  our families to St John's Place for a picnic. However, before the picnic could begin the mums, dads, grandparents and aunty had some learning to do. Together, with their grown-up, the Wrens had to correctly sequence some pictures to show how to make a sandwich. Lots of talking went on between grown-ups and children and decisions had to be made about the order - we really didn't want upside down sandwiches!

Once this task was completed the Wrens then had to use their booklets to make the sandwiches. Lots of fun and excitement as jam was spread and sandwiches cut in to halves and quarters. Finally, we were all able to sit down together to enjoy our well earned picnic.

Thank you to all who came and supported their child. We hope that the afternoon helped to understand some of the processes involved in early reading. Please click here to view the tips from the afternoon.
